Mobile detailing, a car wash, or a detail shop?

They're three different things, and the right one depends on what the car needs and how much of your day you want to give it. We're a mobile detailer, so keep that in mind, but there are plenty of times an automatic car wash is the right call.

Automatic car wash

A tunnel or touchless wash is fast, cheap and open when you need it. For keeping salt off the underbody in winter, a wash with an underbody spray every week or two is hard to beat.

What it doesn't do: the inside of the car beyond the free vacuums, the door jambs, or the film a quick pass doesn't lift. Brush and cloth tunnels can leave fine swirl marks over time, most visible on dark paint. Touchless washes avoid that, but they lean on stronger soap and still leave some dirt behind.

Good for: rinses between details, winter salt, a quick clean before the weekend.

Detail shop

A shop has a building, with lights and its own water and power, so rain and cold don't cancel the appointment.

The tradeoff is getting the car there. You drop it off, find a ride, and come back for it later that day or the next.

Good for: a detail in the middle of a cold snap, and anything that needs an indoor bay.

Mobile detailing

A mobile detailer does the work where the car is already parked, at your house or your work. You don't drive anywhere or sit in a waiting room. We send a two-person crew, and you usually don't need to be home: plenty of customers are at work while we do it, and we send photos when it's done.

The work is the same hand work: vacuum, plastics and trim, glass, leather, hand wash, wheels and jambs. What changes is where it happens.

The limits are real too. We use your outdoor outlet and water spigot, so both need to be near the car. We don't work in the rain or below 40°F, and we only work in daylight, so winter has fewer times and they depend on the forecast.

Good for: anyone whose time is worth more than the drive, families with kids and dogs, and people who work long shifts.

Questions to ask any detailer

Whoever you call, these five questions tell you most of what you need to know:

  1. Is the price set before the work starts, or quoted at the end?
  2. What does the package actually include? "Interior detail" means different things at different places.
  3. What happens if it rains or gets too cold?
  4. Do I need to be there, and what do you need from me?
  5. How many people work on the car?

Our answers: you see your price before you book. Every package lists what's in it, and there's a full breakdown of the interior detail. Rain means we reschedule at no cost. You usually don't need to be home, and we need an outdoor outlet and a water spigot near the car. Two people work on every car.

Which one makes sense

  • Just salt and road film on the outside? An automatic wash with an underbody spray, every week or two in winter.
  • The car needs a real clean inside and out, and you'd rather not lose a day? Mobile.
  • It's January, 20 degrees, and it can't wait? A shop with a heated bay.
  • You want it to stay clean without thinking about it? A wash in between, plus a detail on a schedule. Our monthly plan is a full detail every month at a set price.

If mobile sounds right, we cover Peoria and 25 nearby towns. The service area page lists every one.
